Abstract
The analysis of histocompatibility antigens began with the discovery that some tumors are trasplantable, but success was not consisitently observed. The success rate was very low when outbred animals were used, but it could be raised by using inbred animals. At the begining of the twentieth century another characteristic of transplantation was observed, that is that recipient's own tissues would be accepted, whereas tissues from other donors would be rejected. After that many experiment were carried out to find out what happend in the rejection process. Medawar started expereiments in transplantation in the 1930's, and in 1944 he presented definite evidence for the immunological nature of the rejection of foreign grafts.
