- PublicationThe Adverse Effects of Immune Reactions(Kuala Lumpur: Institute for Medical Research, 1984)Visawawong, NartsudaAs a science, immunology initially developed in parallel with and virtually as a branch of microbiology its primary concern being with the mechanisms involved in the development of resistance by the body to infectious diseases. That clinical attacks of certain diseases could confer a specific immunity or protection against a future attack of the diseases has been known from antiquity. This knowledge was first specifically applied to prevention of diseases in the practice of variolation and later of vaccination in the prophylaxis of smallpox.

- PublicationThe Application of Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (Elisa) in the Laboratory Diagnosis(Kuala Lumpur: Institute for Medical Research, 1980)Torres, Rosario Brigida E.The pheomenal increase in the number and variety of immunodiagnostic tests performed has brought the development and perfection of methods which use labelled antigents or antibodies, resulting in tests with high levels of sensitivity and specificity. One of these is the labelled enzyme whuch can be linked to antibodies or antigens such that the complexes have both immunological and azymic activity. Degradation by the anzymes of a chromogenic of fluorogenic substrate yields an amplification factor, which enables accurate and sensitive detection of the presence of the enzymes.
- PublicationAn Appraisal of Measles Vaccines(Kuala Lumpur: Institute for Medical Research, 1984)Tan, Seong ChanImmunization against measles has become a feasible proposition with the development of live attenuated, killed, and further attenuated live vaccines in tissue cultures. The former two classes of vaccines are effective buat are associated with many side reactions. The latter is effective and safe. Immunization programmes undertaken by many countries have demonstrated the value of measles vaccines in protecting the individuals, controlling the disease and saving costs. Occurrence of outbreaks in immunized populations is mainly due to administrative, technical and attitudinal problems which can be solved. Adequate resources must be available to exploit the vaccine foe effective control of the disease. There is no biologic reason why measles cannot be eradicated with the use of vaccine with aids from their developed conterparts.

- PublicationAutoimmune Disorders of Neuromuscular Transmission and Related Diseases(Kuala Lumpur: Institute for Medical Research, 2011)Kannika PombubpaThe immune system is normally focused on responding to foreign materials and has an inbuilt tendency to avoid attacking self tissues. But when this process goes wrong, the immune system can attack self tissues resulting in autoimmune disease. Autoimmunity is the failure of an organism to recognize its own constituent parts as self, which allows an immune response against its own cells and tissues.
- PublicationAutoimmune Gastric Disease(Kuala Lumpur: Institute for Medical Research, 2012)Dr. Tin Ohn MyatAutoimmunity is the failure of the body's immune system to recognize its own tissues as self and induction of an immune response against them. Any disease that results from such an aberrant immune response is termed an autoimmune disease
- PublicationAutoimmune Gastric Diseases(Kuala Lumpur: Institute for Medical Research, 2011)Dr. Tin Ohn MyatAutoimmunity is the failure of the body's immune system to recognize its own tissues as self and induction of an immune response against them. Any disease that results from such an aberrant immune response is termed an autoimmune disease. The concept of autoimmunity was first presented at the beginning of 2o" century by Paul Ehrlich, the great German bacteriologist and immunologist, who described it as "Horror autotoxicus" or "the horror of self-toxicity" describing the body's innate aversion to immunological self-destruction. However, occasionally, immune system can attack itself and does so in the autoimmune diseases

- PublicationBacterial Vaccines - The Past and Future(Kuala Lumpur: Institute for Medical Research, 1980)Ala, Melitona O.Bacterial vacciness are instruments of immunization which protect our body diseases. Vaccines in general, are biological substances made from some microorganisms that cause diseases. A person is said to be immune to an infectious disease when the causative agent is prevented from entering and / or multiplying in the tissues. For many of the diseases, the most effective form of immunity is that which develops after an attack of a disease.
- PublicationBacterial Zoonoses in the ASEAN Region((Seameo-Tropmed) Institute for Medical Research, 1983)Eishah Bte Abdul RahmanThe WHO Expert Committee on zoonoses at its third meeting in 1966 defined zoonoses as those infections which are naturally transmitted between vertebrate animals and man. However in 1969, Schwabe came up with a more apt definition of zoonoses as "those infections and infestations which are shared in nature by man and lower vertebrate animals".
