The Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS) was launched to provide data on health-related behaviours among students aged 13 to 17 years, to assist countries in developing health priorities, to establish intervention programmes, to allow for cross-national comparisons and to reveal trends in the prevalence of health related behaviours. The GSHS comprises components to generate a self-administered, computer-scannable questionnaire with core questionnaire modules, core-expanded questions and country-specific questions following a standardized sampling approach and a school-based methodology. Developed by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in collaboration with UNICEF, UNESCO and UNAIDS, the GSHS provides a nationally representative open-access dataset on adolescent health behaviours and risk and protective factors from 104 countries from 2003 to 2018, with the majority of participating countries conducting surveys during this time period. The GSHS includes information on more than 620 000 students and on 10 leading causes of youth and adult morbidity and mortality, namely: alcohol use, dietary behaviours, drug use, hygiene, mental health, physical activity, protective factors, sexual behaviours, tobacco use, violence and unintentional injury. The GSHS country-specific datasets are freely available at the WHO’s noncommunicable disease microdata repository: [https://extranet.who.int/ncdsmicrodata/index.php/catalog/GSHS#_r=&collection=&country=&dtype=&from= 1999&page=1&ps=&sid=&sk=&sort_by=proddate&sort_order=desc&to=2019&topic=&view=s&vk=]
